A rare and unusual incident has been reported from India, where a deceased candidate emerged victorious in a local government election, drawing widespread attention and sparking legal questions.
Candidate Passes Away After Filing Nomination
According to Indian media, the incident took place in a village in Rajanna Sircilla district of Telangana, where Murali, a candidate contesting the Gram Panchayat Sarpanch election, received the highest number of votes despite having passed away before polling day.

Murali reportedly died of a heart attack on December 5, shortly after submitting his nomination papers for the local body election. His sudden death occurred before voting could take place, but after the official nomination process had been completed.
Ballot Papers Could Not Be Changed
Election authorities decided to proceed with polling as scheduled because ballot papers had already been printed prior to Murali’s death. Officials noted that once ballots are printed, making changes becomes difficult due to administrative limitations and legal procedures governing election processes.
As a result, Murali’s name remained on the ballot paper, alongside that of his opponent.
Villagers Vote as a Mark of Respect
Reports suggest that many villagers deliberately cast their votes in Murali’s favor as a gesture of respect and sympathy following his death. The emotional response from the community led to an unexpected outcome at the ballot box.
According to Indian media, Murali secured more than 700 votes, defeating his rival by a margin of approximately 378 votes, despite not being alive on election day.
Results Put on Hold
Since the winning candidate is deceased, authorities have temporarily withheld the formal declaration of results. Election officials are now reviewing relevant provisions under Panchayat election laws to determine the next legal course of action.
Officials said consultations are underway to decide whether a fresh election will be required or if another legal mechanism can be applied in line with existing regulations.
