FBR POS Device Protests Erupt in Islamabad

Share This Article:

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad witnessed a fresh wave of FBR POS device protests on Tuesday as traders rallied against the mandatory installation of POS devices in small businesses. The demonstration, organized by the All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran (APAT) and the Traders Action Committee, drew participants from both Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Led by APAT’s Ajmal Baloch, the rally started at Aapara Chowk and proceeded toward the FBR office. Heavy police deployment near a local hotel prevented further movement, but traders staged a sit-in, voicing strong opposition to what they called a “black law” and “anti-business” government policy.

Traders Demand Withdrawal of POS Policy

During the FBR POS device protests, leaders including Khalid Chaudhry, Sajid Butt, Naeem Awan, Altaf Shah, Mehrullah Dad, Azhar Azad, and Sardar Saqib (President, Chamber of Small Traders Rawalpindi) condemned the government’s approach. They warned of nationwide protests if their demands were ignored.

Ajmal Baloch demanded the immediate withdrawal of the POS device policy and called for legislation to impose capital punishment on those involved in corruption. He cited an IMF report estimating Rs. 53 trillion in annual corruption, accusing the FBR of being a major contributor. He alleged that small traders were being unfairly targeted while bribery and misuse persisted under the guise of the POS initiative.

Allegations of Misuse and Corruption

The FBR POS device protests also highlighted claims of misappropriation. Baloch alleged that legally imported tyres and non-custom-paid vehicles seized by authorities were ending up in the hands of bureaucrats and their relatives. He further accused FBR officials of living lavish lifestyles, with children studying abroad and lower-level employees owning luxury vehicles, while small traders faced harassment.

Baloch warned that any attempt to install POS devices or seal shops in Islamabad would be met with strong resistance, signaling a determined stance from traders.

Next Phase of Protests

The APAT leader announced that the next stage of FBR POS device protests is scheduled for January 16, including a planned sit-in at Zero Point and a blockade of the Srinagar Highway. He also threatened a nationwide shutdown strike and a protest at D-Chowk if the FBR continues its current policy.

In his address, Baloch appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to intervene, protect small traders, and address what he described as corruption and excesses by the FBR. The ongoing FBR POS device protests underline growing tensions between small business communities and the federal tax authority, signaling potential escalations nationwide if demands are not met.
