Karachi Launches Bold Crackdown to Dismantle Illegal Floors and Unsafe Portions

Share This Article:

The civic authorities of Karachi have launched a major crackdown against the unlawful construction of floors, unauthorized extensions, and unapproved residential portions throughout various parts of the city. Led by the Sindh Building Control Authority, the action is in response to increased complaints by the public regarding unsafe constructions, violations of approved building plans, and growing risks to structural integrity in densely populated neighborhoods.

The enforcement teams were sent to Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Garden, and District Central, among others, where heavy machinery was deployed to raze unapproved floors and dangerous structures. According to officials, many of these buildings had exceeded their sanctioned limits by constructing additional floors without technical sanction and safety checks. These illegal constructions have put a lot of pressure on Karachi’s overloaded infrastructure, beginning from water supply to sewage systems and electrical distribution, increasing the chances of building collapses.

Unsafe Expansions and Past Tragedies Expose the Cost of Regulatory Gaps

The crackdown follows a string of high-profile incidents in recent years when buildings with illegal additions partially or completely collapsed, causing casualties and property losses. Authorities say these tragedies could have been avoided if safety regulations were enforced in the first place. They added that some builders and property owners have been exploiting regulatory loopholes by adding extra floors or subdividing residential units into multiple portions to maximize profits at the cost of safety.

SBCA Intensifies Action as Karachi Moves Toward Safer, Regulated Urban Development

So far, several buildings have been sealed, while notices have been issued to the owners and developers with directions to stop the ongoing illegal construction. Officials of the SBCA said the operation is being carried out without politicization and would be followed by strict punishment, including legal action against the violators. Residents in some neighborhoods have welcomed the move, saying the illegal structures had blocked ventilation, increased congestion, and weakened the stability of adjacent buildings. Others criticized the authorities for acting too late or targeting constructions that were completed years ago. The SBCA has announced that the crackdown will continue in stages over the coming weeks, with additional teams set to inspect high-risk zones. Plans are also being discussed to introduce a digital monitoring system that will track building approvals and construction progress in real time to prevent future violations. Authorities urged citizens to verify building approvals before purchasing any property and reiterated their commitment to ensuring safe and lawful urban development across Karachi.
