KARACHI: Karachi is preparing to witness a major transformation in its public transport system as Karachi double-decker buses are scheduled to return in January 2026, ending a gap of several decades. The revival reflects renewed government focus on high-capacity urban mobility to address congestion, pollution, and commuter demand in Pakistan’s largest city.
Modern Fleet with Diesel and Electric Technology
The upcoming Karachi double-decker buses include five diesel-powered double-deckers and 34 modern electric buses, all imported from China at an estimated cost of Rs3 billion. These buses are designed to meet international safety and environmental standards while offering improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and better passenger comfort compared to older fleets.
High-Capacity Route on Shahrah-e-Faisal
According to officials, the Karachi double-decker buses will operate along Shahrah-e-Faisal, running from Model Colony to Tower, one of the city’s busiest transport corridors. Each bus will accommodate approximately 115 to 120 passengers, significantly easing pressure on existing routes during peak hours and improving daily commuting efficiency.

Government-Led Transit Expansion Plans
The Sindh Mass Transit Authority, in coordination with provincial transport officials, is finalizing plans for a formal rollout of the Karachi double-decker buses. Authorities have also indicated that electric bus services will be expanded to additional routes across the city as part of a broader shift toward sustainable public transport.
Smart Fare Systems and Future Integration
Alongside fleet expansion, the government plans to introduce automated fare collection systems to enhance commuter convenience. These digital systems will integrate seamlessly with the Karachi double-decker buses, reducing cash dependency, improving transparency, and enabling better route planning through data-driven insights.
A Positive Shift for Karachi’s Urban Mobility
The return of Karachi double-decker buses represents more than nostalgia—it signals a practical solution for mass transit challenges. With higher capacity, cleaner energy options, and modern infrastructure, the initiative aims to restore confidence in public transport and improve the overall quality of urban life in Karachi.
