New York, October 31, 2025 — Steady, soaking rain sweeping across the Northeast has triggered flooding in parts of the greater New York City metropolitan area, causing travel disruptions, waterlogged streets, and warnings from local authorities.
The rainfall, which began overnight, intensified through the morning, leaving sections of Queens, Brooklyn, and northern New Jersey under several inches of standing water. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued flood advisories across the region, cautioning that rainfall rates could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
“Some neighborhoods are seeing significant ponding on roadways, especially where storm drains are clogged with autumn debris,” said an NWS meteorologist in Upton, New York. “Commuters should avoid flooded roads — it only takes a few inches of water to lose control of a vehicle.”

Public transportation has also felt the impact. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported delays on several subway lines due to water on tracks, and city crews have been deployed to clear drains and monitor underpasses prone to flooding. In New Jersey, officials urged residents to stay home where possible, noting that minor rivers and streams were expected to crest later in the evening.
Forecasters expect the rain to continue into early Saturday before tapering off, with total rainfall amounts ranging from two to four inches across the metro area. Cooler, drier air is expected to follow the storm system, bringing relief by the weekend.
Local emergency services are reminding residents to stay alert for updated advisories and to report blocked drains or flooding through city hotlines.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, no major power outages or injuries have been reported as of Friday evening. However, authorities warn that conditions could worsen overnight if rainfall persists at the current pace.
