Govt Targets Installation of 3,000 EV Charging Stations by 2030

Share This Article:

Pakistan has set an ambitious goal to install 3,000 electric vehicle EV charging stations nationwide by 2030, marking a major step toward expanding clean transportation infrastructure and supporting the country’s transition to environmentally sustainable mobility.

According to an official document shared with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) on Sunday, the government has earmarked 240 charging stations for installation during the current fiscal year. These early installations are intended to build momentum for the much larger nationwide expansion planned over the next five years.

Under the framework, private companies will take the lead in establishing and operating the charging stations. However, the rollout will be jointly supervised by several key government bodies, including the Ministry of Industries and Production, the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), the Ministry of Energy, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), and various power distribution companies. This coordinated approach aims to ensure that the expansion meets regulatory standards, grid requirements, and the overall objectives of the national energy transition.

The initiative is a core part of the Draft New Energy Vehicle Policy, prepared by the Ministry of Industries and Production to accelerate electric mobility adoption across Pakistan. The policy outlines incentives, regulatory frameworks, and long-term targets designed to encourage EV manufacturing, charging infrastructure development, and consumer adoption.

Progress is already underway. Since the issuance of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure and Battery Swapping Stations Regulations on October 24, 2024, NEECA has granted 72 licenses to companies seeking to build EV charging networks. Officials say this early uptake reflects growing private-sector interest in Pakistan’s emerging EV market and is expected to speed up nationwide infrastructure development.

With increasing environmental concerns, rising fuel costs, and growing global momentum toward electric mobility, Pakistan’s push to expand EV charging infrastructure is being viewed as a crucial move in shaping the country’s future transport landscape. The government believes that widespread availability of charging stations will help remove a major barrier to EV adoption and pave the way for cleaner, more energy-efficient transportation options in the years ahead.
