Pakistan Eyes AI-Driven Oil and Gas Exploration to Unlock Untapped Reserves

Share This Article:

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan could potentially unlock billions of barrels of untapped oil and gas reserves using advanced AI-supported exploration technologies, industry experts said at the 2nd International Oil and Gas Conference 2025. The event was held on Monday, bringing together national and international energy companies, policymakers, and experts to discuss opportunities and challenges in Pakistan’s energy sector.

AI-Powered Exploration for Onshore and Offshore Basins

Speakers highlighted that Pakistan’s onshore and offshore basins remain largely underexplored. AI-assisted seismic imaging and geological modeling can accelerate discoveries in tight gas, shale gas, and deeper reservoirs while reducing drilling costs. Kuwait Petroleum Country Manager Ali Taha Al Temimi said Pakistan’s current gas production of roughly four billion cubic feet per day falls short of demand, necessitating new exploration strategies.

Offshore Potential and Untapped Resources

Pakistan’s offshore area covers more than 282,000 square kilometres, yet only 18 wells have been drilled to date. Experts estimate prospective resources in offshore Pakistan could reach six to seven billion barrels of oil equivalent. A major offshore success could attract global investment, similar to discoveries in Namibia, they noted.

Energy Reforms and LNG Utilisation

Government officials, including Joint Secretary Petroleum Shehbaz Tahir, discussed ongoing energy sector reforms. They stressed that imported RLNG, previously dedicated to select power plants, should be redirected to industries and captive power plants to enhance efficiency. Speakers also emphasized the importance of LPG for rural communities and the need for strict safety enforcement.

Call for Investment and Policy Support

Panelists urged rapid investment in exploration, faster approvals, stronger private sector participation, and consistent energy policies to ensure long-term energy security. AI-supported technologies combined with political commitment and investor confidence were highlighted as crucial to reshaping Pakistan’s energy landscape.
