Strategic Pakistan–Vietnam Trade Push Gains Momentum

Share This Article:

Pakistan–Vietnam trade is entering a decisive expansion phase as both countries move closer to achieving a bilateral trade volume of $1 billion in the near term, with an ambitious long-term vision of scaling it up to $10 billion. This momentum reflects a shared commitment by Islamabad and Hanoi to deepen economic engagement beyond conventional trade, transforming it into a broader strategic partnership.

Vietnam’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Pham Anh Tuan, recently highlighted that consistent year-on-year growth has laid a strong foundation for enhanced cooperation. He emphasized that both governments now view Pakistan–Vietnam trade as a pillar of future regional economic integration, particularly given the combined consumer market of nearly 350 million people.

Leadership Alignment Strengthens Pakistan–Vietnam Trade Vision

The Prime Ministers of Pakistan and Vietnam have formally endorsed the goal of expanding Pakistan–Vietnam trade through structured cooperation, investment flows, and policy alignment. Vietnam’s rapidly growing economy, which recorded global trade exceeding $800 billion last year and is targeting $1 trillion, offers a vast opportunity for Pakistani exporters seeking market diversification.

From Pakistan’s perspective, strengthening Pakistan–Vietnam trade aligns with broader objectives to boost exports, attract foreign investment, and reduce dependence on traditional trading partners. Both sides recognize that their economies are complementary rather than competitive, creating space for mutually beneficial expansion.

Rising Trade Volumes Reflect Strong Momentum

Recent trade figures underscore the accelerating pace of Pakistan–Vietnam trade. Bilateral trade reached approximately $850 million in 2024, up from $750 million in 2023, marking steady and sustainable growth. Pakistan’s exports to Vietnam stood at around $328 million, while imports from Vietnam totaled $522 million, reflecting Vietnam’s strong manufacturing base.

Pakistan’s export basket to Vietnam remains dominated by agricultural and industrial raw materials, including cereals, cotton, leather, meat products, and pharmaceuticals. On the other hand, Vietnam exports higher-value manufactured goods to Pakistan, such as electrical and electronic equipment, textiles, and food commodities like coffee and tea. This trade structure highlights clear opportunities for value addition and diversification within Pakistan–Vietnam trade.

Priority Sectors Drive Deeper Economic Cooperation

Both countries have identified priority sectors to elevate Pakistan–Vietnam trade to the next level. These include textiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, information technology, energy, and manufacturing. Vietnam has expressed strong interest in increasing imports of Pakistani rice, textiles, and leather goods, while also encouraging Pakistani firms to invest in Vietnam’s industrial zones and technology parks.

Energy cooperation and IT services are also emerging as promising areas, particularly as Vietnam expands its digital economy and Pakistan positions itself as a competitive IT outsourcing destination. These sectoral synergies are expected to play a central role in sustaining Pakistan–Vietnam trade growth.

Preferential Trade Agreement Talks Mark a Turning Point

A major milestone for Pakistan–Vietnam trade came with the revival of the Joint Trade Committee after an eight-year gap. The fifth meeting, held in Hanoi in July 2025, marked a strategic reset in bilateral relations. Both sides agreed to initiate negotiations on a Pakistan–Vietnam Preferential Trade Agreement within the year.

The proposed PTA is expected to reduce tariff barriers, improve market access, and enhance competitiveness for exporters on both sides. Beyond tariff issues, discussions also focused on trade facilitation, halal certification, textile cooperation, aquaculture development, and improved connectivity through aviation and logistics.

Outlook for Pakistan–Vietnam Trade Remains Strong

Looking ahead, Pakistan–Vietnam trade is poised for sustained expansion, supported by institutional mechanisms, high-level political backing, and growing private-sector interest. Regular exchanges, improved visa facilitation, and enhanced financial cooperation are expected to further strengthen commercial ties.

As both countries work toward their $10 billion trade ambition, Pakistan–Vietnam trade is increasingly viewed not just as a bilateral objective, but as a strategic bridge connecting South and Southeast Asia. With continued policy support and private-sector engagement, the partnership has the potential to become a model for regional economic collaboration.
