Karachi: PIA suspends Canada flights this month as part of a mandatory safety program, with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) grounding its Boeing 777 fleet for heavy technical inspections. The suspension, which will last three weeks, is aimed at ensuring passenger safety and preparing aircraft for future travel demand.
Why PIA Suspends Canada Flights
According to airline officials, PIA suspends Canada flights temporarily because its long-range Boeing 777 aircraft are due for scheduled maintenance. These planes, which serve Toronto and other Canadian destinations, are the backbone of PIA’s international operations and must undergo rigorous inspections every ten years to meet international aviation standards.
The Boeing 777s are capable of flying nonstop for up to 17 hours across the Atlantic Ocean. To maintain such capability, the jets will now undergo a comprehensive inspection that includes replacing critical parts, structural checks, and system upgrades.
Safety First, Says PIA
PIA clarified that the move is purely precautionary and reflects its commitment to safety.
“While we regret the inconvenience to our passengers, their safety and the complete fitness of our aircraft remain our top priority,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “This maintenance ensures our fleet is fully ready for the upcoming surge in passenger demand.”
The airline stressed that the checks are part of mandatory international aviation requirements, with every wide-body aircraft undergoing such inspections after a decade of service.
Canada: A Vital Route
The temporary suspension is significant because Canada is one of PIA’s most crucial markets. Thousands of Pakistani expatriates live in Toronto, Vancouver, and other Canadian cities, making the route not only profitable but also vital for connecting families and supporting cultural ties.
Passengers have long favored direct PIA flights to Canada because of the convenience of nonstop travel. With PIA suspending Canada flights, passengers must now look to alternatives such as Middle Eastern and European carriers, which add hours to travel time due to stopovers.
Passenger Concerns
Many passengers have expressed frustration over the timing of the suspension. Students, professionals, and families frequently traveling between Pakistan and Canada will now face higher ticket prices and limited availability on connecting flights.
However, PIA has assured customers that it is working to minimize inconvenience. The airline has offered re-routing options, full refunds where necessary, and customer support through its call centers and booking offices.
Travel agents in Karachi and Lahore noted that demand for flights on Gulf carriers has already surged since PIA suspends Canada flights, leading to a sharp rise in fares.
Canadian Security Assessment at JIAP
The timing also coincides with a Canadian aviation security team’s visit to Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) in Karachi. The team reviewed airport security measures and operational standards, particularly those connected with international flights.
Although PIA did not directly link the suspension to the inspection, experts believe that Canada, like other Western countries, is increasingly focused on ensuring foreign carriers comply with the highest security and operational benchmarks.
Industry Context
For PIA, the suspension highlights both operational responsibility and the ongoing challenges it faces. The airline has been under financial strain for years, struggling with debt and outdated aircraft. However, aviation analysts argue that the decision to ground its Boeing 777s for thorough maintenance is a positive step that demonstrates compliance with international standards.
“Ensuring that these aircraft are fully maintained before resuming service is not only mandatory but also vital for PIA’s credibility on transatlantic routes,” said an aviation analyst based in Islamabad. “The North American market is too important to risk.”
Preparing for Future Demand
Airline insiders suggest that the suspension is strategically timed. With upcoming holiday travel and increased diaspora demand, PIA wants its Boeing 777s in peak condition. Once the inspections are complete, flights to Canada are expected to resume with greater efficiency and reliability.
The airline has also been exploring fleet modernization options, including discussions on leasing or acquiring new aircraft. Strengthening its long-haul capacity is seen as essential for competing against Gulf carriers, which dominate the North American market with modern fleets and multiple daily connections.

Looking Ahead
For now, overseas Pakistanis in Canada will need to rely on alternative airlines or postpone their travel plans. PIA has urged the community to remain patient and reiterated that this is a temporary suspension.
In its closing statement, the airline said:
“Passenger safety comes first. By carrying out this maintenance now, we ensure that our aircraft remain reliable and ready to serve our valued customers for years to come.”
