KARACHI: Sazgar Engineering Works is preparing for one of its most ambitious expansions yet, as the company announces the local assembly of three major models from Chinese auto giant Great Wall Motors (GWM). The lineup includes the Tank 500, Poer Canon, and Poer Canon Alpha — with the Tank 500 planned in both Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrains, while the Poer Canon series will be offered as PHEVs for the Pakistani market.
The development marks a significant step in Sazgar’s transition from a 3-wheeler and compact-SUV assembler into a full-scale manufacturer of high-end SUVs and double-cab pickups. According to Sazgar’s senior executive Ali Hameed, the first locally assembled Tank 500 units will roll out by March 2026, followed by the Canon pickup series shortly after. He made the remarks during PakWheels’ special coverage of the Pakistan Auto Parts Show (PAPS) held in Karachi, where Sazgar showcased its growing partnership with GWM.
Local Assembly to Bring Major Price Relief
One of the most anticipated elements of Sazgar’s announcement is the price reduction expected through local assembly. The Tank 500 HEV was previously launched in Pakistan as a fully imported unit, priced at Rs. 4.5 crore, placing it firmly in the luxury SUV bracket. Hameed revealed that shifting production to Pakistan will make the model “significantly more affordable,” with a targeted launch price under Rs. 2.5 crore.
Industry analysts say this price shift could bring the Tank 500 into direct competition with the Toyota Fortuner Legender, Kia Sorento HEV, and other upper-segment SUVs — though none of these rivals match the Tank 500’s size, cabin features, or hybrid tech. Given its positioning as a full-size premium SUV with advanced driver assistance features, a 2.5-crore price point could reshape the premium SUV landscape in Pakistan.
Tank 500 HEV and PHEV Trims Confirmed
Sazgar has confirmed two Tank 500 variants for local production:
- Tank 500 HEV – 7-seater configuration
- Tank 500 PHEV – 5-seater configuration
The two-trim strategy allows Pakistan to receive both the long-range hybrid variant and the more powerful plug-in hybrid version popular in China and the Middle East. The PHEV’s 5-seater layout also hints at a more premium positioning, potentially featuring higher-level comfort and safety tech.

The Tank 500 is known for its muscular design, body-on-frame construction, off-road drive modes, and a blend of luxury and ruggedness. In China, the PHEV boasts impressive electric-only range figures, though Sazgar has not yet confirmed whether the Pakistani version will retain the same battery specifications.
Canon Pickup Series: Petrol Only for Pakistan
Hameed also clarified that the Poer Canon series — including the Canon and Canon Alpha — will not be offered in diesel variants in Pakistan, despite diesel models being available in China. This decision stems from compatibility challenges: while GWM’s diesel engines meet Euro 5 standards, Pakistan’s diesel fuel quality falls short, posing a risk to both engine performance and long-term reliability.
Therefore, Pakistan will receive only petrol and PHEV versions of the Canon series. In China, the Poer Canon is among the best-selling full-size pickup trucks, praised for its durability, high ground clearance, spacious double-cab cabin, and modern connectivity features. Its entry into Pakistan is expected to intensify competition with the Toyota Hilux Revo, Isuzu D-Max, MG Extender (expected), and other premium pickups.
Local Manufacturing Expansion Underway
To support the launch of its new lineup, Sazgar is also investing in an expansion of its manufacturing facilities. Hameed confirmed that construction and equipment upgrades are already in progress, with completion expected within the next two months. The expansion will enhance production capacity, localization capability, and assembly-line efficiency.
This move aligns with Pakistan’s broader automotive development strategy, which encourages localization of hybrid and electric vehicles to reduce reliance on expensive imports and stabilise the sector against exchange-rate volatility.
A Strategic Step Amid Tough Market Conditions
The timing of Sazgar’s expansion comes as Pakistan’s auto sector faces currency pressure, fluctuating demand, and limited affordability among consumers. However, the premium and upper-mid SUV segments have remained relatively stable, buoyed by customers willing to invest in long-term vehicle value and hybrid technologies.
The introduction of locally assembled GWM models could also strengthen Pakistan’s position as a growing hub for Chinese automotive brands. Sazgar already has a successful track record with the Haval H6 and Jolion, and analysts believe expanding into larger vehicles is a natural progression.
A New Phase for Pakistan’s Auto Industry
As local assembly of the Tank 500, Poer Canon, and Poer Canon Alpha begins, Pakistan may be entering a new phase of premium SUV and pickup truck manufacturing. With competitive pricing, hybrid technology, and an expanded production base, Sazgar’s GWM partnership has the potential to reshuffle the market — giving consumers access to previously unaffordable segments while strengthening the country’s auto-industrial ecosystem.
