Toyota has launched the all-new ninth-generation Hilux pickup, marking a major update for the popular pickup. The new model introduces an electric variant for the first time, making the Hilux Toyota’s first-ever body-on-frame EV, while continuing to offer petrol and diesel options.
Production of the electric Hilux will begin globally by the end of 2025, with internal combustion engine (ICE) models expected in showrooms by mid-2026.
Hilux EV Powertrain
The electric Hilux uses Toyota’s proven IMV platform with a 59.2 kWh battery and dual-motor setup for all-wheel drive. It delivers 205 Nm of torque at the front axle and 268.6 Nm at the rear.
Range, Payload, and Towing
The Hilux EV offers a range of approximately 240 km per charge. It can carry a payload of 715 kg and tow up to 1,600 kg. Toyota has not yet released details on charging speeds or how payload affects range.

Petrol and Diesel Variants
The ninth-generation Hilux retains its 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, favored globally for its reliability. A 2.7L naturally aspirated petrol engine will also be available. ICE models offer a payload capacity of 1,000 kg and can tow up to 3,500 kg. The diesel engine is paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system to enhance efficiency.
Design Updates
The new Hilux features an evolutionary design with a modernized silhouette. The front end includes slim LED headlights and a piano-black grille with the Toyota logo. EV variants have a closed honeycomb bumper design, while the petrol and diesel versions retain an open mesh pattern.
The pickup rides on new 18-inch alloy wheels, and the rear design features updated tail lamps and fender creases, along with a bumper provision for a side step.
Interior and Features
The cabin receives a significant upgrade with two 12.3-inch digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Additional features include safe exit assist, driver monitoring, 360-degree camera, powered and ventilated seats, and wireless phone charging.
The new interior is designed to offer both comfort and advanced technology while modernizing the Hilux’s previously outdated cabin.
