5G Spectrum Auction Expected Soon

The engagement comes at a critical time as Pakistan plans to auction its 5G spectrum in late January or early February, according to Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja.

The auction is expected to pave the way for Pakistan’s first commercial deployment of 5G services, which have been delayed for several years due to regulatory and economic challenges.

Focus on Digital Growth and Public Services

During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the role of next-generation digital connectivity in driving economic growth, boosting productivity, and improving public service delivery.

“Pakistan is interested in benefiting from Ericsson’s global experience in advanced networks, including 5G, and remains committed to developing secure and sustainable information technology infrastructure in line with national needs,” the prime minister said, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

5G Central to Economic Agenda

The government has repeatedly said that expanding digital connectivity is a core part of its broader economic strategy.

Officials believe 5G will help:

  • Improve financial inclusion
  • Promote cashless and digital payments
  • Strengthen disaster preparedness and response systems
  • Support innovation across health, education and industry
